Altech Advanced Materials AG: Battery project CERENERGY receives confirmation from the Federal Ministry of Economics that it is eligible for funding of up to €46.7 million
Heidelberg, September 2, 2025 - Altech Advanced Materials AG (“AAM” ISIN: DE000A31C3Y4) announces that Altech Batteries GmbH has received official written confirmation from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK) as part of the STARK initiative that the CERENERGY sodium chloride solid-state battery project in Schwarze Pumpe, Saxony, is eligible for funding, in the amount of up to €46.7 million. This corresponds to 30% of the expected total investment costs for the construction phase, excluding working capital, financing costs, and interest. Final approval of the funding can only be granted after further positive review of the application, the overall financing for the CERENERGY project, and approval of the STARK program by the German Bundestag as part of the 2026 federal budget. Altech has actively applied for various subsidies from the Free State of Saxony, the German federal government, and the European Union. The STARK program supports projects that promote the transformation to an ecologically, economically, and socially sustainable economic structure in Germany's coal regions in Brandenburg, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and North Rhine-Westphalia. Battery production companies such as Altech Batteries GmbH are also eligible for funding. Uwe Ahrens, Member of the Management Board of Altech Advanced Materials and responsible for the implementation of the CERENERGY project: "The written confirmation of the STARK program for the CERENERGY project is a great sign of support and recognition for this innovative battery technology, which was developed jointly by Altech and the Fraunhofer Society. If the final approval for funding is now granted, we will be a big step closer to establishing our first battery plant for environmentally friendly and sustainable sodium chloride solid-state batteries in the heart of Europe." About CERENERGY CERENERGY is a novel sodium chloride solid-state battery for stationary operation that combines unique properties, making it an efficient and resource-saving alternative to currently used lithium-ion batteries. The battery, which consists of table salt, nickel, and ceramics, does not require any critical materials such as graphite, lithium, and cobalt, which are subject to significant price fluctuations. All materials can be sourced from Europe, minimizing dependencies in the supply chain. The battery has a service life of over 15 years. It is non-flammable and can be operated outdoors in all climatic conditions without separate cooling or heating, and is completely recyclable. Based on a full cost analysis and daily charging cycles, it promises a cost advantage of approximately 50% compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries in stationary operation. A first production plant is currently being planned in Schwarze Pumpe, Saxony. The relevant building applications have been submitted, the land has been purchased, and the production design has been created. The battery chemistry is based on proven technology that the Fraunhofer Institute IKTS has been successfully testing and operating in various prototypes for more than 8 years. An industrial prototype of the 60kWh BatteryPack has been put into operation for potential customers to test, and three letters of intent have been signed for the purchase of the 120 MWh CERENERGY batteries to be produced annually. About Altech Advanced Materials AG Altech Advanced Materials AG (ISIN: DE000A31C3Y4), headquartered in Frankfurt am Main, is a holding company listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange's Regulated Market. The company's objective is to participate in the market for solid-state batteries for stationary battery applications through its stake in Altech Batteries Ltd, Australia (“ATC”), with CERENERGY. Another focus of ATC is in the field of lithium-ion batteries. An innovative anode material based on high-purity aluminum oxide (HPA) – Silumina Anodes – is expected to significantly increase the performance of these batteries for electric mobility.
